Jimmy Fortune Sings Classic Hymn “In The Garden” Live In Columbia, Tennessee, 2019

This is probably one of the best versions of this classic hymn “In the Garden.” What a powerful voice of Jimmy Fortune! Very captivating and what a blessing to hear him sing this. “In the Garden” (sometimes rendered by its first line “I Come to the Garden Alone” is a gospel song written by American songwriter C. Austin Miles (1868–1946), a former pharmacist who served as editor and manager at Hall-Mack publishers for 37 years. The song was first published in 1912 and popularized during the Billy Sunday evangelistic campaigns of the early twentieth century.

About Jimmy Fortune

Born in Staunton, Virginia on March 11, 1955, Fortune began his career as a singer in high school as a member of the Nelcon County High School choir. It was in 1981 when Fortune was discovered by Lew DeWitt of The Statler Brothers. He replaced Lew DeWitt and became an integral part of the group, and he wrote several of their latter-day hits, including “Elizabeth,” “Too Much on My Heart,” and “More Than a Name on a Wall.” He spent 21 years touring, singing, and performing with the Statler Brother. In 2002, after the Statlers disbanded, Fortune continued his career as a solo artist. Fortune and the Statlers were welcomed into the Country Music Association Hall of Fame in 2008.

In the Garden

Charles A. Miles, 1913

  1. I come to the garden alone,
    While the dew is still on the roses,
    And the voice I hear falling on my ear
    The Son of God discloses.
    • Refrain:
      And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
      And He tells me I am His own;
      And the joy we share as we tarry there,
      None other has ever known.
  2. He speaks, and the sound of His voice
    Is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
    And the melody that He gave to me
    Within my heart is ringing.
  3. I’d stay in the garden with Him,
    Though the night around me be falling,
    But He bids me go; through the voice of woe
    His voice to me is calling.

Life’s Railway To Heaven Lyrics

Life is like a mountain railway,
With an engineer that’s brave;
We must make the run successful,
From the cradle to the grave;
Watch the curves, the fills, the tunnels;
Never falter, never fail;
Keep your hands upon the throttle,
And your eyes upon the rail.

Blessed Savior, Thou wilt guide us,
Till we reach that blissful shore,
Where the angels wait to join us
In Thy praise forevermore.
You will roll up grades of trial;
You will cross the bridge of strife;
See that Christ is your conductor
On this lightning train of life;
Always mindful of obstruction,
Do your duty, never fail;
Keep your hands upon the throttle,
You will often find obstructions,
Look for storms and wind and rain;
On a fill, or curve, or trestle
They will almost ditch your train;
Put your trust alone in Jesus,
Never falter, never fail;
Keep your hands upon the throttle,
And your eyes upon the rail.
As you roll across the trestle,
Spanning Jordan’s swelling tide,
You behold the Union Depot
Into which your train will glide;
There you’ll meet the Sup’rintendent,
God the Father, God the Son,
With the hearty, joyous plaudit,
Weary Pilgrim, welcome home.

When He Blessed My Soul Lyrics

Jesus washed my sins away
One glorious morning (praise His dear name)
He blessed my soul (He blessed my soul)
And He made me whole
Ever since that happy day
I’m tellin’ the story (praise His dear name)
Oh how He washed my sin away
When He blessed my soul chorus
(Well you oughta been there)
That blessed morning
(When the love) of the Lord came down
(Into my soul) Into my soul
And He made me whole
(If you’da been there) You’da shouted glory
(To the Lamb) To my Lord and King
(Well you oughta been there) Yes
You oughta been there
When He blessed my soul verse
Jesus claimed me as His own
One glorious morning he blessed my soul
And He made me whole
Ever since this joy I’ve known
I’m telling the story
Oh how He washed my sin away
When He blessed my soul

What a beautiful performance of the classic hymn “Amazing Grace!” These two artists definitely deserved a standing ovation and what a privelege to hear them sang together. Be blessed!

George Glenn Jones was born on September 12, 1931, in Saratoga, Texas. He has been called “The Rolls Royce Of Country Music” and had more than 160 chart singles to his name from 1955 until his death in 2013. Johnny Cash once said, “When people ask me who my favorite country singer is, I say, ‘You mean besides George Jones?’” He achieved international fame for his long list of hit records, including his best-known song “He Stopped Loving Her Today”, as well as his distinctive voice and phrasing. For the last two decades of his life, Jones was frequently referred to as the greatest living country singer. The shape of his nose and facial features earned Jones the nickname “The Possum.”

Amazing Grace Lyrics

John Newton, 1779
[Key: Eb]

Verse 1
Amazing Grace how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.

Verse 2
‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!

Verse 3
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

Verse 4
The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.

Verse 5
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

Verse 6
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, Who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.

Verse 7
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.

Why Me Lyrics

Why me Lord, what have I ever done
To deserve even one
Of the pleasures I’ve known
Tell me Lord, what did I ever do
That was worth loving you
Or the kindness you’ve shown.

Lord help me Jesus, I’ve wasted it so
Help me Jesus I know what I am
Now that I know that I’ve need you so
Help me Jesus, my soul’s in your hand.

Tell me Lord, if you think there’s a way
I can try to repay
All I’ve taken from you
Maybe Lord, I can show someone else
What I’ve been through myself
On my way back to you.

Lord help me Jesus, I’ve wasted it so
Help me Jesus I know what I am
Now that I know that I’ve need you so
Help me Jesus, my soul’s in your hand.

Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior Lyrics

Pass me not, O gentle Savior,
Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

Refrain:
Savior, Savior,
Hear my humble cry,
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

Let me at Thy throne of mercy
Find a sweet relief;
Kneeling there in deep contrition,
Help my unbelief.

Trusting only in Thy merit,
Would I seek Thy face;
Heal my wounded, broken spirit,
Save me by Thy grace.

Thou the spring of all my comfort,
More than life to me,
Whom have I on earth beside Thee,
Whom in Heav’n but Thee.

We’ll Soon Be Done With Troubles And Trials

Song by Bill & Gloria Gaither

Some of these days I’m going home
Where no sorrows ever come,
We’ll soon be done with troubles and trials;
Safe from Heartaches, pain and care,
We shall all that glory share,
And I’m gonna sit down beside my Jesus,
Sit down and rest a little while.

Refrain:
We’ll soon be done with troubles and trials,
Yes, in that home on the other side,
And I’m gonna shake glad hands with the elders,
Tell my kindred good morning,
Then I’m gonna sit down beside my Jesus,
Gonna sit down and rest a li’l while.

Kindred and friends now wait for me,
Soon their faces I shall see,
We’ll soon be done with troubles and trials;
‘Tis a home of Life so fair
And we’ll all be gathered there,
And I’m gonna’ sit down beside my Jesus,
Sit down and rest a little while.

I shall behold his blessed face,
I shall feel his matchless grace,
We’ll soon be done with troubles and trials;
O what peace and joy sublime
In that home of love divine,
And I’m gonna’ sit down beside my Jesus,
Sit down and rest a little while.
